Côte-des-Neiges–Notre-Dame-de-Grâce · 51 photographs · 1947–1976
At Benny Farm, veterans’ housing was arranged around courtyards rather than along streets. The development replaced land still being farmed before its sale in 1946 and answered the demand for homes for returning servicemen. A redevelopment launched in February 2004 followed community consultation; Montréal and local community groups approved the plan. The area now combines social housing, private homes and community organizations. Parc Benny also has a skatepark designed for skateboards and inline skates.
On Rue Sherbrooke, the Loyola campus likewise occupies a former farm, the Décary property acquired for the college’s relocation. Students arrived while buildings were still unfinished, and the college completed its move in 1916. The original buildings included the refectory and the college’s original secondary school building, now the Psychology Building. The Administration Building was completed later, after students were already using the campus for classes. Parc Loyola has a children’s playground, exercise equipment and a picnic area for outdoor recreation.
