Parc Père-Marquette covers a former quarry whose stone went into Saint-Édouard church and Notre-Dame basilica. The Martineau quarry occupied the ground between Marquette, Garnier, Beaubien and Des Carrières; after extraction ended, earth and waste filled the pit. Its conversion to a park belongs to a larger shift from farmland to industrial land and then a residential neighbourhood. Into the late nineteenth century, the area still had the feel of a farming village. Shops and restaurants later helped shape its life as a place to live.
At Marché Jean-Talon, outdoor trading replaced the Shamrock team’s lacrosse games. Opened on May 27, 1933 as Marché du Nord, the market occupies the former playing ground. Its Art Deco reception building on Avenue Casgrain leads into the covered market stalls. The market originally operated on just two days each week; the market began opening throughout the week in 1954. That year, merchants on Rue Saint-Hubert formed an association.
